Three-dimensional stability of Burgers vortices

چکیده
Burgers vortices are explicit stationary solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations which are often used to describe the vortex tubes observed in numerical simulations of threedimensional turbulence. In this model, the velocity field is a two-dimensional perturbation of a linear straining flow with axial symmetry. The only free parameter is the Reynolds number Re = Γ/ν, where Γ is the total circulation of the vortex and ν is the kinematic viscosity. The purpose of this paper is to show that Burgers vortex is asymptotically stable with respect to general three-dimensional perturbations, for all values of the Reynolds number. This definitive result subsumes earlier studies by various authors, which were either restricted to small Reynolds numbers or to two-dimensional perturbations. Our proof relies on the crucial observation that the linearized operator at Burgers vortex has a simple and very specific dependence upon the axial variable. This allows to reduce the full linearized equations to a vectorial two-dimensional problem, which can be treated using an extension of the techniques developped in earlier works. Although Burgers vortices are found to be stable for all Reynolds numbers, the proof indicates that perturbations may undergo an important transient amplification if Re is large, a phenomenon that was indeed observed in numerical simulations.

M ar 2 00 5 Three - Dimensional Stability of Burgers Vortices : the Low Reynolds Number
In this paper we establish rigorously that the family of Burgers vortices of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation is stable for small Reynolds numbers. More precisely, we prove that any solution whose initial condition is a small perturbation of a Burgers vortex will converge toward another Burgers vortex as time goes to infinity, and we give an explicit formula for computing the change...

متن کاملExistence and stability of asymmetric Burgers vortices
Burgers vortices are stationary solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a background straining flow. These solutions are given by explicit formulas only when the strain is axisymmetric. In this paper we consider a weakly asymmetric strain and prove in that case that non-axisymmetric vortices exist for all values of the Reynolds number. In the limit of large...
متن کاملComparison of The LBM With the Modified Local Crank-Nicolson Method Solution of Transient Two-Dimensional Non-Linear Burgers Equation
Burgers equation is a simplified form of the Navier-Stokes equation that represents the non-linear features of it. In this paper, the transient two-dimensional non-linear Burgers equation is solved using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The results are compared with the Modified Local Crank-Nicolson method (MLCN) and exact solutions. The LBM has been emerged as a new numerical method for sol...

This paper analyzes the stability and convergence of the Fourier pseudospectral method coupled with a variety of specially designed time-stepping methods of up to fourth order, for the numerical solution of a three dimensional viscous Burgers’ equation. There are three main features to this work. The first is a lemma which provides for an L2 and H 1 bound on a nonlinear term of polynomial type,...
